Mumbai, the 'Bollywood City', is a city of power, pelf and
possession. It's a city that's always busy, with its people seeming always
in a hurry. Little wonder, that the city actually comes alive as the night
begins to fall. Parties, celebrations, concerts, meetings, conferences,
seminars, fashion shows- the list has perhaps no end. It has got some
popular beaches like Juhu and Chowpatty where celebrities can be seen
taking their leisurely stroll, of course not always.
There are some fantastic options of weekend getaways from the city of
Mumbai. The modern yet traditional city of Pune, pristine beaches of Goa,
scenic hill stops of Kahandala and Matheran, the amazing Elephanta Caves
are but a few options.
Mumbai Pune (160 km) Mumbai
From
Mumbai leave for Pune, a modern city still retaining its age-old values
and traditions. Pune lies at the confluence of Mutha and Mula rivers. The
Maratha king Shivaji who challenged the Mughal empeoror Aurangzeb was
brought up in Pune. After the decline of the Maratha rule, the city turned
into a centre of learning and education. The city offers a number of
attractions like the Aga Khan Palace, the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, the
Tribal Museum, the Jewish Synagogue, the Pashan Lake, the Karla and Bhaja
caves and much more.
Mumbai Goa (582 km) Mumbai
Set out on a journey to Goa- the 'Beach Capital of India'. Lie down on
the sensuous silvery sands and enjoy the breathtaking sights of the
swaying palm groves and the Arabian Sea. You can also indulge in some
adventure activities like wind surfing, parasailing, yachting and
swimming. Enjoy the vibrant nightlife at Colva and Anjuna beaches of the
state.
Mumbai Khandala (101 km) Mumbai
Leave for Khandala to enjoy the phenomenal panoramic beauty that adorn
Khandala. Located in the western part of the state of Maharashtra,
Khandala is set amid the beautiful Shayadri ranges. The hill station
offers attractions like the Raj Machi Park, the Dukes Nose, the Shivaji
Park, the Amrutanjan Point, the Kune Falls, the Tiger's Leap etc.
Mumbai Elephanta Island (10 km from the Gateway of
India) Mumbai
Get to the Elephanta Island to appreciate the breathtaking sights of the
Elephanta Caves. There are ferry services available from the Gateway of
India, taking just 15 minutes to reach the island. Having a history dating
between the 9th and the 12th centuries, these caves resound with the
spiritual energy of India.
Mumbai Matheran (110 km) Mumbai
Escape to Matheran, a scenic hill station at an altitude of 800 m.
Discovered in the year 1850, it Matheran is the most popular and
fascinating hill station in the state of Maharashtra. Appreciate the
2-hour ascent by a toy train to reach the hilltop, with vendors and
monkeys jumping on and off. You can also enjoy its Main Bazaar selling
items like hats, chappals, chiki, cane and leather articles.
